It appears to be down right now, but if you go to www.linksys.com and click
on "Support", then "Knowledgebase", you should find specific instructions.
Just do a search on "Bellsouth".

This may be a stupid question, but....

Trying to help a friend hook up a Linksys BEFW11s4 router/access point to
his Bellsouth DSL connection. We can get the router/access point to pick up
the wireless NIC in the laptop fine, but can't seem to configure the router
to "route" the connection from the DSL modem. The DSL connection is fine,
because we can disconnect the router/access point and the tower gets the
internet feed no problem. Thing is, I've searched high and low on
Bellsouth's site for tech support regarding a wireless connection, but there
is none. From what I read, you have to pay "extra" to "home network" -
which seems ridiculous to me.

His tower and laptop are running Windows 98 w/ plenty of power, but
everything we've tried doesn't work. Outside of calling Bellsouth and them
telling us that he has to pay more, is there anyway to get this thing to
work?

I've got the exact same setup on my cable modem (Comcast) and it took five
minutes - we've been working on his for the last two days. Can anybody
provide any insight/suggestions/comments on what can be done if anything?

thanks

Bill

The knowledgebase is working now. Instead of "Bellsouth", they have it as
"Bell South".

Any way, here is a link to the info you need.

http://makeashorterlink.com/?C38C25746

Apparently BellSouth uses PPPoE, which is something you don't use with
Comcast.

Set up the router by the instructions. Do not run the PPPoE software on any
of the connected PCs. The router will handle all of that.

After everything's om/wing, dump the PPPoE software. It's not needed.

Bob, depends on the "dsl modem" that Bellsouth supplied him with. The
newer Westells have routing and authentication built in. The older
"Alcatel Speed Touch" require PPPOE authentication through software or a
router...

Be sure to set the modem/router to bridge mode, if feeding another
router...

Windows 98 can be a pain to get connected to any network setup. As long as
the DHCP is enabled in the linksys and the laptop is set to get its IP
automatically, you should be set but it may take a few trys. Run ipcfg.exe
(check that program name) and see what IP you are being assigned on the
laptop. Try Renew if it's outside the DHCP range. All of a sudden it'll
start to work.
