If you are using static IPs on your PCs, set the DNS server to point
to your router, and the router will automatically proxy to the correct
DNS server it has on record. Cool feature.

I noticed that a DHCP lease from an SMC router provides itself as the DNS.
The Linksys provides some remote DNS.
It's handy to know that the Linksys will forward DNS requests.

I wonder if it caches the lookups or just forwards them all.

It just forwards the DNS request. There's not enough memory in these
little routers to maintain a proper state table much less maintain a
cache of DNS entries.
