I am beginning to wonder if the latest round of Microsoft worms hit my
LinkSys firewall router. It goes from working for nearly 3 years (even
under Linux) to being slow and not working for NNTP the Thursday before
the "big event". Anyone heard anything along these lines?

A couple of ideas. The sites you could be accessing could be dealing
with the problem and in turn have a slower response time or possible
that linksys router is dying (which we have seen before).

No, but there is a new variation of the 'sobig' email virus that is causing
a lot
of traffic. If you don't have it on your own network it may flooding your
isp line or your nntp server.
