Linksys Router setup

Hi,

I do not know if this is possible. I have searched around my settings and
set up port forwarding for remote desktop connection on my router. However
this allows any IP address to conenct to this port if they so wish. Is it
possible to only allow certain IP address to connect to this port? Or do I
need to load on a software firewall like zonealarm to be able to accomplish
this. I had zone alarm before but removed it when I got my router as it had
a built in firewall.

with the Linksys BEFSR41 router, it is not possible to filter based on
incoming IP address (only incoming port).

So you would need a firewall on the desktop machine.


But I've only used the BEFSR41: I don't know if other linksys routers have
different features/abilities.

Thanks for your response. I have the WAG354G router. I don't think it's
possible to filter IP addresses either from browsing the settings.

This may not be relevant to your router model, but certainly for the WRT54G
you can get 'custom firmware' - which triples the available options
available, and is truly a fantsatic addition to the router.

Just had a quick look on google; apparently there is no custom firwmare for
your model of router due to the source-code for it only being released
recently.

you can get 'custom firmware' - which triples the available options
available, and is truly a fantsatic addition to the router.

1. Could you configure your newsreader to correctly prefix the lines of
text you're quoting 2. How about about typing 'WRT54G firmware' into
Google?
Sveasoft used to be the popular option, but a number of people are now
unhappy about their licensing, DDWRT is another one to look at.

The one I use as is the hyperwrt 'tofu' version - but search google and
you'll find what you're after...

It allows you to increase the transmission power (and thus the range of the
router) exponentially, from 21mw up to 251mw - the capability of the
equipment. However it could fry your unit if outputting at 251mw, so
experiment wisely! Plus noise etc increases with power output, but I know
you know that ;-)
