Strangely, the new Linksys router I installed disconnects from the net
now and then. It looks like I can not stay connected 24/24, 7/7. And I
do not see why could that be.

The linux box/router I had at this location before never did this
before. As I am serving web pages, an interruption is not acceptable. I
am working to find ou the reason. And if anybody has any idea, this is
welcome.

Assuming you've checked that there are no "issues" re: this router and
Linux and/or your ISP, I would snoop along these lines:

-- when you say "disconnect" what do you mean -- ie., if you ifconfig
down then ifconfig up do you get a new lease "quickly"? Or is this a
static IP? Home or business account?

-- what do the logs from the Linksys say? Dropped signal from ISP?
What sort of connection do you have? dsl? cable? isdn? frame?

-- events not correlated, ie., your ISP just happened to institute a
policy of arbitrary IP changes ever so often to discourage users from
running servers.

Some routers with some ISPs do have "issues" re: locking and holding a
signal, so that is what I would check if the modem/router is going
offline. Google may help.

If the Linksys is maintaing a lock on the signal, but you have lost
network connectivity, then suspect ISP net problems. Can you ping
your GW or name servers?

Does your ISP expect you to respond to keep-alive monitors that your
Linksys config is ignoring/dropping?

In these lean economic times, many ISPs are resorting to "tricks" to
extend network usage rather than expand capacity -- like automatically
dropping continuous online connections to non-business accounts after
a certain interval.

Hardware and network details will be needed by others to sort out the
most likely causes.

Waiting for details,

Home account. Hem? "ifconfig up/down"? Before, (Router/firewall with
RH7.2) I just put "/usr/sbin/adsl-start" in the /etc/rc.local and that
was it. No I have to http:/192.168.0.1 and click "Connect". After *some*
time, then it comes up. The IP I am given (don't know why) hapens to
always have been "199.243.215.91"

DSL. Just happened to see that a sub-menu does enable to activate the
logs... I put it on now. That will help (!)

Maybe. But I doubt, as I was running apache at 199.243.215.91 before and
am still now, after I did set up this router. I just forwarded the port
to the server, now located /inside/ the network.

Yes, maybe. And maybe I should check with the ISP.

ping my 192.168.0.1 is ok. ping, for example, my ISP; "ping
www.mediom.com" gives nothing. Name server; I will check this.

Then it would quite a coincidence that they would do this at the exact
period I happen to install this router. But well, it is a possibility.

I have three pc internal on the internal network; (statics IP)

192.168.0.6
192.168.0.3 Web server
192.168.0.5

The router is 192.168.0.1.

Thanks for the help. I will double check the logs, now... Maybe I am
back, in a day or so. (Since yesterday afternoon, however, no cut happened)

Thanks,
Gaetan
