linksys router/ap to D-link client

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) for several days to get a D-link
DWL-900AP+ (in client mode) to talk to a Linksys router/AP. This
D-link AP was able to successfully work with a D-link router/AP but
that was replaced by the Linksys due to problems. As far as I can
tell, the D-Link client has never successfully "talked" with the
Linksys router however it does "see" the Linksys on the site survey
screen. The D-link website says that client mode is not a standard and
is not supported for communication to non-D-link APs.

I have some questions that maybe others can answer.
1. Does the D-link (in client mode) work with the linksys? I have
128bit encryption turned on if that matters.
2. How should the D-link be configured when used in client mode? Is
the IP address of the D-link box itself (192.168.0.50) relevant?
Should the DHCP in the D-link be enabled or disabled? Should the PC
using the D-link request an IP address (via DHCP) from the D-link (if
DHCP enabled) or from the Linksys router (192.168.1.1)?
3. Don't the Linksys and D-link need to be on the same subnet? Out of
the box, the Linksys is 192.168.1.1 and the D-link is 192.168.0.50
both with subnet masks of 255.255.255.0. It is not clear to me from
the D-link documentation if the IP address of the D-link is even
relevant in client mode but one would certainly think that the IP
address of the PC connected to the D-link would have to be in the same
subnet as the linksys router. I tried changing the IP address of the
D-link to 192.168.1.50 but that does not work either.
4. The client PC is running Windows Me and has the option in TCP/IP
properties to obtain the IP address automatically. However, it does
not seem to have the options for obtaining the DNS information
automatically. So, what do I put as the DNS address? The DNS server
for my ISP? The router IP address? What is the gateway address? I
assume this would be the linksys router address.

Sorry for so many questions. Maybe it would be easier to toss the
D-link in the trash and buy a Linksys Ap for the client side but it
seems to me that this ought to be able to work. I have other notebook
computers that connect fine with the Linksys router.
