Hello!

I have a Linksys Printserver WPS54GU2. I have two printers Lexmark Z32 (USB)
and a HP Laserjet Printer Series II.(parallel)

I can get the two printers to print. The Lexmark prints perfectly but the HP
printer prints out junk, garbled. Has anyone else experience this problem? I
know that the HP is an old printer. Is there a possibility that the HP is
not compatible with the printserver?

Any suggestions are welcome!!!!!!

Thanks!

Not sure. I just installed a wired parallel port printserver from D-Link
(the price finally came down to where I am willing to buy it) for my LJ 4
and they work well together. The LJ 2 should be more basic and should also
work with the existing printservers. The instructions for the D-Link
mentioned that data sent over TCP/IP needs to use the LPR and not the RAW
protocol. I assume that you are using the proper printer driver for the LJ
2? Does this driver work properly when the printer is connected directly to
the computer? Try switching to one of microsoft's generic drivers to see if
those print out the proper text.

Thank you for replying Yves!

Funny, I started to buy a D-Link printserver but I decided to buy a Linksys
printserver since my router and hub are
from them.

I have the lastest driver for the HP LJ2. I even deleted the driver and
installed it again. I still have the problem.
When I looked at HP LaserJet Series II Properties|Advance|Print Processor I
see that the default
datatype is RAW I don't even see an option called LPR. Where would I go to
check that?

The printer works fine when it is connected directly to the computer. Gee
this was suppose to be easy!

Thanks!

The LPR option is found in the TCP/IP port you would have created for the
printer (select the port and then "Configure port..."). However, looking at
the manual for your printserver, it might not use LPR. In order to use LPR,
answer ID 146 at Linksys' site might help. They list the name of the LPR
Queue for the first parallel port as L1

My main reason for purchasing the D-Link wired, as opposed to any wireless,
printerserver was the lack of WPA support (at least currently), the price
and the fact that my printer is very close to my linksys router.

Have you tried printing just text? Does that also appear garbled? Are you
using encryption?

Hello Yves,

After all that I discovered that the printer cable extender I was using was
not compatible! I thought about
it last night after reviewing your comments/suggestions.

The print was more or less OK but a few characters were jumbled - as if
there was
a brief disconnection.

This morning I went to the computer shop purchased a new parallel printer
extender cable remove the old one and replaced it with the new one. Now
everything works!

Thank you Yves for making me think about the situation. The info above
given is not in vain.
I will print it out and add it to my book of Network goodies. These bits of
information >always<
comes in handy.

Best wishes
Elton
