Linksys Cable Modem / Access Point

I have a linksys Cable modem wireless gateway. When I first connect a
device I connect @ 54 mps the slowly it shrinks to 1 mps. This occurs
on whatever machine I have on the wireless lan. The hardwired machine
is always fast. Any ideas?

Weak signal or interference. Starting at 54 Mbps is normal because
there's no traffic. Speed only means something when traffic is flowing.
