I've spent 4 hours with Linksys tech support, but they can't figure out
what's wrong.

Hardware: Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router BEFW11S4 ver 4 and Linksys
Wireless-B Notebook Adapter WPC11v4.

System: Dell Inspiron 4000 running Windows XP (completely updated with
service packs, security updates), 384 MB RAM. Has Intel PCI Ethernet
adapter (10/100) and the PCMCIA adapters are Texas Instruments PCI-1420
Cardbus Controllers (2).

Internet: Comcast Cable through Motorola cable modem.

Problem: While a hardline connection from the router to my laptop allows
internet access, my wireless adapter does not. Although the wireless
internet icon in the status bar indicates that it recognizes the router and
shows excellent signal strength, I am unable to 'ping' the router and the
operation times out.

Here are the router settings:
Wireless is enabled
SSID is 'linksys' (changed successfully several times, but still no ping)
Channel is '6' (also changed successfully several times, no ping)
WEP is Disabled
IP address is obtained automatically.

What we've tried:
- fiddled with SSID and channel. Can change when I'm connected via ethernet
cable, but on disconnection of cable and reboot, wireless adapter recognizes
router, sends packets but minimal received. Pinging times out.
- forcing IP address in device manager - pinging times out.
- updated firmware to latest version, uninstalled adapter driver and
reinstalled. Adapter sees router, but again no packets are received.
Pinging times out.
- in Advanced wireless of router setup, changed RTS threshold ,
Fragmentation threshold, TX rates to 1-2 Mbps, antenna selection
(diversity). Same result, pinging times out.

At this point tech support gave up, gave me a case number and referred my
case to Level 2 tech support. I'm scheduled to be called by them later, but
I have my doubts that Linksys knows what's going on.

Has anybody encountered this problem and knows what to do about it?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike L

I don't see the basics listed in your troubleshooting. Is TCP-IP installed
in Network properties and bound to the relevant hardware?

If possible, borrow another laptop with WiFi, and see if it works;
or, borrow a different WAP and try that. You should at least dope
out which end is broken on your WiFi link before returning hardware.

Sorry. Yes, to both questions.

Bingo.

Borrowed a card from a neighbor downstairs. Wham bam download a driver and
it works like magic.

So the next question is, I suppose - is the card defective or perhaps will
the Linksys card just not work with my configuration?

The card I borrowed is made by SMC, and my neighbor isn't too happy with it.

Anyway, thanks tons, Bob.

I can't tell from here, but I suspect the card is bad. I hope you
bought the card from someplace with a friendly return policy.

Mike,

Let me guess, Linksys advised you to return the products before they gave
you level II support..

I had the same problem. After dealing with five different tech support
personnel (two were level II) I figured out what was going on and managed to
get the WPC11 working although it won't stay connected with WEP enabled.
This was my second WPC11. I reutrned the first on thinking it was
malfunctioning.

First, I had the Linksys software from the disk installed. This software is
not compatable with WinXP. The software would not uninstall under
Add/Remove or the uninstall feature in the software program. I had to
manually remove the program so that it would quit automatically loading
everytime I rebooted.

Second, under the run, msconfig, under setup, last listing is Wireless
Configeration Zero. This must be enabled.

I was able to surf the net after this. Still no WEP so I enabled MAC
filtering. Finally, make sure Block WAN Request is disabled.

Hi Phyllis,

Thanks for your reply. Linksys hasn't recommended returning the hardware
yet, but I might try your steps before I talk to level II support on
Tuesday.

Regards,

Mike
