The cable might require that your router's MAC address is registered with
them. This is true of my Mediacom cable. If I disconnect my desktop and
plug in my laptop, any web browser window will open to an authentication
page at
https://12.223.4.9/ and I can tell it to remove the old MAC and
connect to the new MAC.
If I connect a router, this web page doesn't come up, and I have no
particular clue why I can't connect to the internet. The Linksys has a
"Clone MAC" option where you can key in the MAC of your PC so that the
cableco can't see the difference between the original PC and your router.
Once I do that, the router works fine with the cable connection.
On WindowsXP, start-run-cmd ipconfig /all
look for the Physical Address to see the MAC of your PC.
The alternative is to call your Cable Support.
