Hi,

I have just bought an Linksys BEFW11S4 Version 4 and I am going slightly
mad. Here is the situation.

My Alcatel Ethernet ADSL Modem connects to my ISP through PPTP (wich is
normal here in Europe). When I connect the DSL modem to the computer
(without the router) and set it up like my ISP tells me to everything works
fine.

This means that the problem is not the modem or my computer.

Now I install my brandnew Linksys BEFW11S4 Version 4 Wireless DSL Router/
with 4 port Switch. I configure the the router and set it up through PPTP
like Linksys The Netherlands tells me to. Everything works like a charm. I
can connect to the internet and "surfs up"!

So whats the problem?

Well after about one or two minutes my connection dies. I have to
"disconnect" and "connect" through my router in order to make it work again.
And then the same thing goes over and over again.

Conclusion: It must be a router issue.

I had that problem and did a bios upgrade from the linksys site and now no
problem. There have been messages that upgrading the firmware is bad but I
had no problem.

Hi Emil,

I have also done a firmware upgrade to 1.50 today, after Linksys The
Netherlands told me to do so. Nothing happened?! Same problem. So it solved
your problem, very good :-)

Unfortunately my problem still exists.

Alexander,

I'm having exactly the same problem and have also upgraded to 1.50 firmware
with no success.

It seems we are not alone:

I will post back if I ever resolve the issue, but the more likely outcome is
that the Linksys will be going back for a refund.

Because of this problem Linksys is sending me a V3 router. I work from home
as a Network Eng and having to reboot the Linksys router in the middle of a
call with a customer was getting old. As I work for the parent company of
Linksys I use that as leverage but pushing the problem with them will get
you the same results, a Version 3 router that will work. T

Duncan,

I have solved my problem with a work-around. I hacked my DSL modem (Alcatel
Speedtouch Home Ethernet Modem) so I can setup DHCP Spoofing on my DSL
modem. My modem now connects to the internet through PPP and gives my
Linksys BEFW11S4 the external IP address. Now I can set the Linksys through
"Automatic IP" and voila, it works like a charm!

Hi Emil,

I think you have a version 2 or 3 BEFW11S4. Mine already came out of the box
with firmware 1.45 wich is still higher than your firmware version.

Anyway, it works and thats what counts for you!

Cheers

Alexander

What do you mean by "hacked"? Did you enter a configuration screen, or do
something that would normally not be done by a user?
What did you do?

Did you try the Linksys setting for cloning your PC MAC address?

I had to do that on my SMC router in order to get it to talk to my cable
modem. An alternative would have been to put the MAC address of the router
into the table at the Cable ISP, but I wouldn't consider that "hacking".

No I tweaked the modem. The Alcatel Speedtouch Ethernet Modem is both a Home
and Pro version in one. By giving the modem a set of codes you tell it to
act as a Pro version in stead of the Home version.

As a Pro version it has a lot more to offer. Routing capabilities, Firewall
options, multiple connection types, in stead of just one (PPTP). So now I am
able to set up a PPP connection through my modem using SIP Spoof. My modem
makes the connection to my ISP, it is "always-on" and it gives the internet
IP address to my Linksys. I can now set the "Internet Connection type" on
the Linksys BEFW11S4 V4 to "Static IP" in stead of "PPTP".

Problem solved.
