Before posting evidence, this is what I've tried since original post:
- upgraded Linksys firmware to latest version 1.50.13, May 6 2004 - no
change to symptoms
- looked at US Linksys support pages - lots of "internet connection"
problems but all the causes seem to be pretty basic config errors
which stop any and all access whereas it is clear from my Linksys
status page that the Netgear looks to have responded appropriately to
the Linksys' DHCP request since the Linksys has got the correct
Internet and nameserver IPs, and netmask.

Well, both boxes seem to work OK independently, the Linksys is now
about a year old, and the Netgear was bought 'as new' on eBay, so
returning either is not my first choice, especially since they work
together when the Netgear is not feeding the Linksys' WAN port. I feel
they *should* work together and the problem is likely to be a Linksys
configuration subtlety which I'm missing or a bug in one of the two
sets of firmware but neither manufacturer web sites describes similar
problems. Yes, if I was doing this all again today, I would buy an
all-in-one wireless-G box (as I did last month when setting up some
friends' home network with a Netgear DG834G). I must admit, buying
such a box and selling the current pair on eBay has crossed my mind
;>).
Anyway, I've tried the problem configuration again and grabbed some
evidence for you to see.
After setting the Netgear into modem (rather than router) device mode,
power cycling it, then while it is still connected to the LAN (and not
the Linksys WAN port), tell it to disconnect then reconnect. Checking
the Netgear PPP status page shows:

Looks OK so move modem RJ45 across from Linksys switch port to WAN
