Linksys BEFW11S4 loses its internet connectivity

I recently purchased a new WAP/router/firewall box,
a Linksys BEFW11S4-V4. And, I downloaded and installed
the latest version of the firmware for it (i.e. V1.45.7 )
from the Linksys website.

(This new unit was a replacement for a D-Link, model 713P,
which worked fine, but lacked a few features that
Linksys has. Most importantly, I wanted the Linksys
feature of being able to add an EXTERNAL antenna. I
also like the ability to have the full 32 entries
in the MAC filter table [instead of just the 4 that
D-Link provides], as well as being able to shut off
the SSID-broadcast, and to save/restore the configuration
info.)

But after only a few days use, I've run into an apparent
SHOWSTOPPER problem: after only a few hours of use each time,
I'm losing the connectivity out thru the cable-modem
to the Internet. When it happens, ALL PCs connected to
the Linksys router can no longer talk out onto the Internet,
whether they be hard-wired or wirelessly connected to the
Linksys. If I power-cycle just the Linksys box, wait
about 30 seconds (for the Windows-XP machines
to auto-reconnect) then everything works fine again for
an hour or so, until the same thing happens all over again.

I've ruled out that the problem is ISP-related (Comcast).
And, I've ruled out that its Windows-related. And, I've
ruled out that it is specific to only wireless-connections,
since one of Win-XP systems is hard-wired thru the Linksys
on one of the cat-5 ports and it loses its connection, even
during days when neither of the 2 wireless-connected PCs
are even booted up.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems using
this model of Linksys router/wap? Any ideas as to what might
be triggering it? Or, any ideas on what sort of
special testing I might do to narrow in on what is
causing this trouble? As I said, this is becoming
a real showstopper, and my D-Link router/wap/firewall
never had this sort of problem.

TIA...

Dave

Sounds like you have bad hardware; my BEFW11S4 (v1) only needs to be
reset every couple of months (far more robust than any of the
WinWhatever OSs I use).

OTOH, there have been several comments from BEFW11S4 users about
sensitivity to power line glitches. It might help if you plug your
router into a line filter.

I called Linksys support today and described the problem as
stated below. (I should have done this earlier, before I took
the Linksys back to the store for full credit. Because now, I
don't have a Linksys box like this to verify their theory/fix.
But, some of you readers might want to hear their diagnosis
anyway, so here's what Linksys support tells me

The support person asked me who my ISP was. I told him
"Comcast". He then asked: What kind of cable-modem do
you own/are you using: I answered "Motorola Surfboard".

Aha, he said...I think I know what your problem is. He says
that my cable-modem is in some sort of collision of IP-ADDRESS
values with the Linksys router. He says that's why I'm losing
Internet connectivity randomly at various times of the day.

(He did NOT say whether this happens with ALL Motorola SurfBoard
cable-modems or just some subset of them. My Motorola cable-modem
happens to be relatively quite old...it's at least 2 years old, as I
recall.)

He says that the fix is to change the range of IP-ADDRESSES that
the Linksys is handing out onto my private network from its
default value (192.168.1.x) to something else (such as 10.10.10.x).
Or, in other words, my gateway address becomes 10.10.10.1, etc, etc.

Has anyone heard of this fix and tried it? Does it solve the problem
with loss of Internet connectivity?

Hope this helps someone. (Sometime, I may go out and beg/borrow/buy another
Linksys BEFW11S4, just to test the validity of this suggested fix.)

Cheers...

Dave

I'm having the exact same problem with a LinkSys BEFW11S4 that I
installed over the weekend. I too am using a Motorola Surfboard.
Every hour and a half or so connectivity drops. The lights on the
router look ok. I reset the router and everything comes back. I'm
considering re-installing my older non-wireless Linksys Router, which
performed flawlessly, and attaching a wireless network access point.

FWIW, I recently posted an inquiry on a very similar problem with a new
Belkin wireless g router. In my case, I lost Internet connectivity every
several hours for a few seconds. The router's "connected to the internet
" light would start flashing (suppose to be solid). it would then
typically reconnect within 5 seconds or so by itself.

I also have Comcast and am using a Motorola SurfBoard SB4200 cable
modem. However, I don't understand the alleged "IP collision" process.
Maybe you can get the Linksys tech to elaborate and/or provide
documentation - this might help us pinpoint the problem area.

FWIW - I was having the same problem with the same setup... After
about 2 weeks of ripping my hair out, I returned it, went back to my
old linksys BEFSR41 and got a WAP

Do you have cable TV as well as the cable internet?
I don't. I have cable internet, but DirecTV for TV.
The tech that came out to the house didn't care about the T4 Timer Expired
messages that were occuring several times each day. He only read the
signal levels being reported by the modem, and I think he hooked up a
monitor as well, but he didn't care about the logs.

He said that because I didn't have a cable TV subscription there was a trap
on the line to prevent me from receiving TV. These sometimes cause
trouble, so he was going to remove it. He was only allowed to remove it
because I had a direct line from the cable drop to the cable modem, with no
TV connections possible.

The T4 Timer Expired message have dropped to one or two per week since
then.

Motorola BitSurfer modems all have http interfaces.
http://www.192.168.100.1

The time stamp on the "logs" page is an odd format.
031104183743 is 2003, november, 04, 18:37:43 but that's not local time, and
it's not GMT. It's off by exactly 13 hours from my local time.

When I lived in New Hampshire, I too had these 'traps' on the line.
However,
the EXPLANATION for why the trips were recommended had NOTHING
to do with whether one had TV-service or not. The explanation was simply
that they were for 'noise isolation'. But, at any rate, Comcast does NOT
seem to
use them here in Florida...at least, not here at my house. (Whether that is
a sin
of omission or by design, I do not know.)

But, the good news is that I brought one WITH ME from NH, so I'm gonna
try putting it on my Internet segment and see if that makes any difference
(when I get access to this Linksys-model for testing again later this week).

Cool. I DID NOT KNOW THAT! Thanks!
