I called Linksys support today and described the problem as
stated below. (I should have done this earlier, before I took
the Linksys back to the store for full credit. Because now, I
don't have a Linksys box like this to verify their theory/fix.
But, some of you readers might want to hear their diagnosis
anyway, so here's what Linksys support tells me
The support person asked me who my ISP was. I told him
"Comcast". He then asked: What kind of cable-modem do
you own/are you using: I answered "Motorola Surfboard".
Aha, he said...I think I know what your problem is. He says
that my cable-modem is in some sort of collision of IP-ADDRESS
values with the Linksys router. He says that's why I'm losing
Internet connectivity randomly at various times of the day.
(He did NOT say whether this happens with ALL Motorola SurfBoard
cable-modems or just some subset of them. My Motorola cable-modem
happens to be relatively quite old...it's at least 2 years old, as I
recall.)
He says that the fix is to change the range of IP-ADDRESSES that
the Linksys is handing out onto my private network from its
default value (192.168.1.x) to something else (such as 10.10.10.x).
Or, in other words, my gateway address becomes 10.10.10.1, etc, etc.
Has anyone heard of this fix and tried it? Does it solve the problem
with loss of Internet connectivity?
Hope this helps someone. (Sometime, I may go out and beg/borrow/buy another
Linksys BEFW11S4, just to test the validity of this suggested fix.)
Cheers...
Dave
