LinkSys BEFW11S4 hang

Every so often, maybe once a week, my BEFW11S4 hangs up and needs to be
power cycled to allow me to connect. I can find no correlation to anything
and didn't know if anybody else had experienced this.

If by 'hang up', you mean as I described in the posting just 4 msgs before
yours,
then, yes. (the management html-interface still works fine, but my
connectivity out
thru the cable-modem to the Internet is what gets hosed...for all clients,
whether they
be hard-wired thru a cat-5 port or via a wireless-card.)

Have you talked to Linksys support about this yet? (I plan to in the next
day or so,
and I'd recommend that you do so, too. It's a serious bug, in my view. I'm
gonna
have to put my rock-solid D-Link 713P back in place, as my wife uses our
residential link for serious business from home 2 days a week. One day, she
had
to re-power the Linksys 6 times. Yesterday, it happened to her twice.)

Cheers...

Dave

I called Linksys support today and described the problem as
stated below. (I should have done this earlier, before I took
my Linksys back to the store for full credit. Because now, I
don't have a Linksys box like this to verify their theory/fix.
But, some of you readers might want to hear their diagnosis
anyway, so here's what Linksys support tells me

The support person asked me who my ISP was. I told him
"Comcast". He then asked: What kind of cable-modem do
you own/are you using: I answered "Motorola Surfboard".

Aha, he said...I think I know what your problem is. He says
that my cable-modem is in some sort of collision of IP-ADDRESS
values with the Linksys router. He says that's why I'm losing
Internet connectivity randomly at various times of the day.

(He did NOT say whether this happens with ALL Motorola SurfBoard
cable-modems or just some subset of them. My Motorola cable-modem
happens to be relatively quite old...it's at least 2 years old, as I
recall.)

He says that the fix is to change the range of IP-ADDRESSES that
the Linksys is handing out onto my private network from its
default value (192.168.1.x) to something else (such as 10.10.10.x).
Or, in other words, my gateway address becomes 10.10.10.1, etc, etc.

Has anyone heard of this fix and tried it? Do you also use a Motorla
SurfBoard
cable modem and suffer this symptom? Does this fix solve the problem
with loss of Internet connectivity?

Hope this helps someone. (Sometime, I may go out and beg/borrow/buy another
Linksys BEFW11S4, just to test the validity of this suggested fix.)

Cheers...

Dave

I've been lied to by many tech.support gangs, including those from
Linksys and Comcast, and this tale pegs my BS meter.

I let my BEFW11S4 use DHCP to assign 192.168.1.x addresses, and it
works fine - even though it is connected to Comcast via a Moto
Surfboard 4200.

My Moto Surfboard does have its DHCP enabled with its DHCP range of
192.168.100.x. Does not seem to matter, since my PCs all get their
DHCP IPAs from the BEFW11S4 and since the BEFW11S4's WAN-side gets
its DHCP IPA from some Comcast DHCP server (it gets a 24.x.y.z, not
the 192.168.100.x the Moto would assign). I believe that the Moto
*only* assigns IPAs when the BigCable is down -- I think that is what
is meant by the statement on the Moto's Configuration Page, which
says: "When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users
on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem
DHCP Server".

But maybe Linksys is right by some interpretation. After all, even
a stopped clock is right twice a day (once for military clocks).

Yes, I'm afraid that is BS. If you had a collision than it would exhibit
itself immediately, not randomly throughout the day. I have the same
problem and I use a 2000 Advanced Server domain controller to give me DHCP.
Plus, I use 192.168.99.x address'.

I'm convinced it is simply getting overrun with data, some kind of buffer
problem or something. If I leave an internet radio station going all day,
it'll eventually hang, consistently. If I leave the house and nothing is
going on in terms of TX or RX, then it's up when I get home.

I'm returning mine and ordered a Netgear. I had to do the same thing with
my Linksys PCMCIA card, it hung my laptop, so I got a NetGear and have had
no problems. Too bad, I liked some of the things the LinkSys offered.

I CC:'d them so they can put it in the loop.

I also had a 2 month old BEFW11S4 V4 with .7 firmware and it also will need
to be reloaded once a week, sometimes twice a day. I just shipped it back
to Linksys for a new one. They gave me a load of BS on how to reset it and
then reconfig and it still stopped responding. I have 1 laptop on wifi and
2 pc's on cat5 and one printer, never all on at the sametime. A coworker
has the V3 and has never seen a problem.

Yes, disabling UPnP did the trick for me.
