Does it tell what version it is anywhere on the outside of the box?
Where do you look to find this out?

There is a label on the bottom of the router.

Actually, there are two. You want the one with two barcodes on it
(Model # & MAC Address).

Just below the Linksys logo, in the upper left corner, mine says Model:
BEFW11S4 ver 3.2.

After the latest (unreleased) firmware update, 1.45.1, my BEFW11S4
version 4 runs like a champ. I've pushed a few hundred gigabytes of data
through it using Linux, Windows, and FreeBSD behind it, and it didn't drop
the connection or disconnect.

I just looked at the box for my "Wireless-B Networking Kit" and it
doesn't say what version the router is. Suprisingly, it does say the
WPC11 is version 4.

I never heard of a version 3.4 of this router. As far as I know there
are only 1, 2, 3, 3.2, & 4.

My kit came from Fry's Electronics, if it helps.
