I am thinking about buying a LinkSys BEFW11S4 AccessPoint/Router.

I need to know if a external antenna can be fitted to this device please.

If Yes is the answer what type of connector is it?

Thanks Victor nr Belfast Northern Ireland

YOu might look at the g-models. I believe they have much higher power than
the befw11s4. Linksys now offers a separate $75 output amplifier for the
befw11s4.

Also, if you do buy the befw11s4, make sure you buy one of the models that
are upgradable to WPA security. The original model, which I have, is not
upgradable.

I hear alot of stories about the G gear being lower power ortho i havn't
noticed since my upgrade. A $75 amp sounds like free chocolate to me. Can u
give me a URL? Or specs?

How external is 'external'? If you mean on the roof external, then I
recommend against the BEFW11S4. Buy an access point without switch and
router and place the access point AT THE ANTENNA! Microwaves really don't
like going through wires, so the antenna cable must be kept very short.
Ethernet cable can be 100 meters without degradation and cat 5 cable is a
lot less expensive than microwave transmission line.

Share your reasons for the external antenna and you might receive advice
much more valuable than antenna connector information. Michael Erskine has
published some nice reflector designs the may enable you to accomplish your
objective without an external antenna.

For what it's worth, the connector on the BEFW11S4 is RP-TNC. It's a TNC
connector with a trans-gender center conductor.
