A friend has the Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I have the BEFSX41 router -
His doesn't seem to have the "view logs" like mine -
it only shows the "tables" of incoming & outgoing addresses & ports -
but no "view log" command like this.....

02:44:10 TCP from 192.168.1.150:1058 to www.google.com(216.239.37.99):80
02:44:56 TCP from 192.168.1.150:1059 to groups.google.com(216.239.51.104):80
02:45:14 TCP from 192.168.1.150:1060 to
www.dslreports.com(209.123.109.175):80
02:45:15 TCP from 192.168.1.150:1062 to i.dslr.net(209.123.205.211):80
02:45:15 TCP from 192.168.1.150:1064 to
www.dslreports.com(209.123.109.175):80

is this correct - the BEFW11S4 does not show logs like above ?

I have an 11S4 V1, there is a view incoming and view outgoing log
capability. I also have logging turned ON and log to one of my PCs. I run
WallWatcher to capture the log and WallReviewer to examine it. Works really
well!

The BEFSX41 has SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). It has a completely
different logging mechanism.

I have used it - It is a very diff. product from the BEFSR41 and BEFW11S4
products. It even has a time daemon that goes out and sync's it's time with
some world time clocks.

It cannot be that different as the 11S4 V1 router use to have SPI. SPI
was removed from all version of the 11S4 over a year ago due to problems
with SPI working correctly.

Wallwatcher works with any Linksys BEF model router according to the
documentation.

Excuse me - but they are different.

Aside from the standard BEFSR11/41 features - it can be monitored via SNMP
(and downloadable MIBs), it has SPI / Firewall, it has much more detailed
and robust logging (system, users, and firewall), it has VPN tunneling, it
supports URL filtering, ActiveX, JAVA, and Cookie Filtering, it has a NTPD
(I think it can be used as a NTP server - I don't remember).

Yes - older versions of the BEFSR11/41 firmware had SPI (it was removed in
version 1.43 - Sept '02) - but the BEFSX41 is based on a different firmware,
and has a different interface.

....and according to the WallWatcher web site - The Add-On "GETLOG - Version
2 has extended support for the BEFSX41 as well as improved support for
earlier BEF-class Routers"

Not to offend you, but no Linksys router has a FW. At most, it has NAT
and SPI and some FW like features and that's it.

It meets the specs in the link.

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/about-NAT.asp

If it was an appliance with a FW, it would meet the specs in the link.

http://www.firewall-software.com/fir...rewall_do.html

You want an appliance with a FW, then Watchguard, Cisco, etc come to mind
and cost well over the price of a Linksys router, like nothing under
$200.

The Linksys routers have the title of Firewall in them, but routers in
this class and price range do not have FW(s).

That's fine - I agree with you - Linksys calls it a "firewall", where in
fact is has firewall like features.......but that is off topic from where we
started and what I replied to ... about the logs, and the similar versus
difference of the products .... ;-)

I like Link Logger - it's not free - but I think worth the cost

tnx for the pointer to Wallwatcher -
http://www.sonic.net/wallwatcher/

BTW - when it starts up - how does it find the Linksys router ?
I don't have my protocol analyzer turned on tonight,
but will play a little tomorrow -
Wonder about a Public vs Private Community name -
I'm guessing it's doing some broadcasts with Port 162 & SNMP -
but I'll have to see how it only finds the Linksys router
vs anything else that might reply to SNMP broadcasts & queries -
Phil -
