Linksys BEFW11S14 Wireless Router - How to Use as Access Point

I purchased a Linksys Wireless Router, because it was about 1/2 the price of
a Linksys WAP11 Access Point.

What I really want is an Access Point. Is there any way to completely
disable the routing functions in the Wireless Router? I have the WAN port
disconnected, have the router connected to my LAN with the Uplink Port, and
have DHCP disabled.

It seems to work somewhat, but slowly. I suspect that it is trying to route
the traffic, which is confusing everything. I have a great wireless signal,
but everything I try to access using the wireless connection is slow. If I
use a hardwire connection to my LAN everything is very snappy.

I can't use the wireless routing function, because I already have a VPN
Router in my network connected to my cable modem.

Is there any way to completely disable the routing function in the
BEFW11S14, or should I throw in the towel and spend the money on a WAP11
Access Port.

Thanks,
Mike Schumann

I used my BEFW11S4 version 1 as an access point only and it worked
just fine. I did what you described. In addition, on the router's
"Setup" tab. next to the item "Login", I selected "disable".
I use 40 bit (64 bit) WEP. Higher levels of encryption
have been reported to be slow on some equipment.

How fast do you expect it to be? How fast is it?

When I got my BEFW11S14, I already had a wired SMC firewall/router
configured to my DSL. I connected the uplink port, disabled the DHCP, and it
worked fine. I have rearranged it so that I am now connected normally.

What speed are you seeing?
http://www.cnet.com/internet/0-3761.html
has a bandwidth meter that says I am at 600K, which is the speed of my DSL.

Did some more testing. It turns out that I had the router set up in Gateway
mode. I changed it to Router mode and then ran speed tests. On a hardwired
connection, I'm getting about 2.5MBytes / Sec; Over the wireless
connection, I'm getting 2.1Mbytes.

I think switching to Router mode made a BIG difference. Hopefully, my
problem is solved.
