LinkSys BEFSR11 and WAP11 broadband-sharing small-network combo

Hi

I'm starting to do some work on a small five-computer
network someone else set up.

The network has a broadband internet connection. The
connection feeds into a LinkSys BEFSR11 single-port
broadband/DSL router. The router's LAN port is connected
to a LinkSys WAP11 access point.

The client computers, each with a wireless net connection,
are set up to obtain IP addresses from
the router. The router, at 192.168.1.1, serves as each client computer's
internet gateway.

I have one question now, and may have some more as I
work on this network. Any help folks can offer is much
appreciated.

[1] Currently, the client computers cannot ping one another. For example,
if I'm on a client that's been assigned the IP address 192.168.1.101, and
ping the client at 192.168.1.102, the ping times out. Is it possible that this
unpingability is related to settings on the BEFSR11 router ?

thanks

Stan

No, the router cannot control that.

I have a BEFSR11 witht he LAN port connected to a switch, and a WAP11
connected to the switch....and I have no problems with wireless clients
pinging each other.

1) What OS are the clients using? Are they using a software firewall or
have firewall enabled in XP? That would stop the pings.
2) Try using a hub / switch to connect the BEFSR11 and the WAP11 together.
3) Is it only pings that are stopped? Can the clients share files and see
each other?

Thanks, glad to close out that branch of the error-possibilities shrubbery.

XP Home [2], XP Pro [1], 98 SE [1], and ME [1].

Doh !!

Yep, they're running Zone Alarm (free) 3.7.

And what I didn't do was to set up the IP addresses of
the computers as members of Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone set.
Not doing so would indeed stop the pings.

Off to set that up correctly today.
Should fix things; I'll report back to
this thread.

Thanks again for the assistance, Jim.

Stan

Howdy

Just to close this thread out:

Yep, adding the IP addresses of the computers
on the local net to Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone
set did the trick.
