Linksys and DualWAN

Hi,

I bought Linksys RV042, which allows connecting two WANs using DualWAN
functionality. Now, I'd like to use it for load-balancing on two DSL
connections from two separate ISPs.

Please comment on using such configuration (also for RV082 router, it's
almost the same AFAIK).

I'm mostly interested in:
1) How does DualWAN work in details? (TCP sessions, packets?)
2) How can I make HTTP and SMTP inbound access via DualWAN? (Round Robin
in DNS?)
3) How does it potentially work with inbound VPN IPSEC connections?

Thx for information,

I don't know the way Linksys does their dual wan, but here is how it works
in generl. This is just basic though.

Dual wan is good for backup connection status and load balancing. If one isp
link goes down the router will failover to the other online working link. It
would do this automatically.

Load balancing is a way to have increased performance online if using a
bunch of users/lan computers all at the same time. It is possible to send
the second link traffic based on how much traffic you want on each link or
round robin. Round robin is the ability to send every other packet to each
link. I think this is correct, but not 100% sure. So if you have 2
connections in an active/active state and are using round robin then each
link would be like getting 50% of the packets/traffic in a way. So if you
are doing stuff online then every other packet goes to the next link. Packet
1 is on link 1 and the next packet is going to be through link 2, 3rd packet
link 1, 4th link 2 and so forth. this kind of shares the
connection/performance/bandwidth. Also you can set up a percentage to use
for each link. Or you can say use link 2 when traffic on link 1 gets to a
certain amount of bytes/speed. This works only if the router does it. It
would be called Spill Over I think.

with dual connections you can route incomming traffic to whatever connection
you want if the router will do this. It is like binding a protcol to
whatever link you want. Then all of that traffic goes to that link. So you
can bind http traffic to 1, pop3 to link 2 etc. Same for outoging if the
router can do that. For your http and smtp incomming you can just bind port
80 to link 1 and port 23 to link 2. Is port 23 smtp? I forget what port is
smtp. You would bind the smtp port to link 2. This way link 1 gets the web
traffic and no smtp and smtp goes to link 2. So web surfing wouldn't be
slowed down by smtp access and so forth.

Dual wan works either way, tcp sessions or packets. It is possible to do
both depending on the router feature set I think.
