Ok... This is something I can comment on now. I literally just got done
doing some unscientific testing using the LinkSys WRT54g router, the
LinkSys BEFW11S4 router and the Linksys WSB24 B signal booster. First I
connected the the WSB24 to a known good working BEFW11S4 and near as I
can figure I got about a 10% real gain in signal strength. With the
WRT54g hooked to the WSB24, I could not determine any signal strength
increase whatsoever. I used same external antenna and same client, with
2.08 firmware from LinkSys.
After installing Sveasoft, or Wi-fi's firmware and removing the WSB24, I
gained approximately 40% in signal strength. I think for two reasons.
First, I was able to get assign signal to just one antenna finally and
second, I could increase the output to the highest setting available.
(Which escapes me after a long day.)
So my moral of the story is that with just a free firmware hack you
*can* really experience an actual increase in signal strength. For about
$80 bucks, you can add a matching box that doesn't do a whole lot, if
anything at all. Word of caution though.... Some stories of meltdown
with the firmware upgrade on maximum settings. On the other hand, you
get VPN and some other nice settings that LinkSys is now charging for
and you can either mod the WRT54g for cooling, or run it at a lower
setting, or both.
