Cable modem, to 4 port router. Cable from one router port to pc (I call
it the host) on floor one and a cable from another router port to the
pc on second floor. I want to link the second floor pc to another pc on
the same floor (side by side) and the third pc has to communicate ONLY
with the other second floor pc. I was thinking a simpe hub might do.
Cable from host to hub then a cable for each from a hub port to client
and cable from another hub port to the un-networked pc. What do you
think?

Thank you,

Vern

I think I'm totally confused by your description of what you want to do
and how you want to do it. If you want the two PCs to talk to each
other why not just use a NIC in each, and a crossover cable?

I think you just networked the un-netowrked PC :-)

A hub is like an interconneciton if you plug them all in there they
are all connected to each other electrically.

You may be able to do sometihng with IP addressing, or with password
security / selective enabling of services. Or perhaps a second
ethernet card in the networked PC upstairs.

What are you trying to do and trying to avoid ?

Phil

Add a second IP address to common PC. You can allocate up to 4. This should
be in a separate subnet. Give the second PC an address on the new subnet
net. Make sure IP forwarding in not switched on in the common PC.

I think this will achieve what you want
