Line noise *with* Adsl fliters - help!!

I've been on ADSL4less (Hotchilli Internet) for a couple of years. The
service has been OK but recently I started to notice a crackling on the
receiver end of the phone. After investigation, I've found the
crackling to come from the broadband connection being plugged in.

I've tried changing the ADSL filters (three different ones in fact),
but it's no good.

I've called BT but they insist there's no fault on the line.

Do I have to buy a new ADSL modem to sort this out? I've had an old
internal DABS modem in the machine for about 3 years, has THAT gone
wrong and does it need to be replaced with an external modem? Which
modem would be good to buy on e-Bay? I was looking at the
"BT-VOYAGER-100-USB-ADSL-MODEM-WORKS-WITH-AOL-ALL-ISP" on e-Bay, but
I've read of some compatiability problems with XP, and I certainly
don't want AOL on this PC. Can anyone recommend a modem replacement, if
that's what has gone wrong?

Or is Hotchilli causing the problem?

There are line faults which can cause noise problems on your line if
the ADSL is in synch & if tested the line test are ok. What you have
to do is make sure that your kit is working properly, filter, modem
etc & then report the fault to BT.

Remember if they can demonstrate to you that the line is ok upto your
NTE5 you will be liable for a visit charge if nothing else, but as I
have aloready said there are known problems, normally
H(igh)R(esistant) connections which can & do cause this type of
problem...

I would suggest you get an ADSL router rather than another modem.
They are far, far better as they offer firewall protection as standard.

I assume you have ruled out a problem with the actual phone by trying
another one?

If so, if you remove the bottom part, then connect your filter, then phone
and ADSL modem to the socket behind, does the problem still persist?

I had a crackling issue back when I first got broadband. BT ran some tests
and told me the line was not at fault, yet I still had problems, although it
didn't happen all time. After a couple of weeks I filed a fault for
crackling with the telephone line (didn't mention ADSL), and they sent an
engineer out - discovered that the cable from the eaves to the phone socket
had splits in the plastic coating, and the cracking was occuring anytime the
air became damp (misty, rain, sometimes even when it was just cold). Once
the cable was replaced the crackling was gone, and I've no problems since.
It might be worth calling BT to get them to send an engineer to test the
phone line, rather than the ADSL.

Had the same problem, bought brand-name faceplate filters (two) and
microfilters but not help, called my ex-provider (PlusNet) and got
a so-so response and asked me to raised a fault to BT. BT engineer came
and said nothing can be done .. take a drastic move, switched to NTL and I
live happily ever after .. I'm getting 4Mbps connection right now while
the max I could go with ADSL was only 1Mbps..
