Just failed the extended reach trial.

Apparently, my Line Length was 5.5km, and my line loss was 72db.

Why the loss on the line so high? I know someone with a 6km line with just
40db loss, is there anything at all I can do to sort this out? Would
ordering a new line help?

One of the reasons why a line loss can be high is that it has
aluminium rather than copper over part of the distance. Ordering a
new line may not change this.

Harry.

One issue I am aware of is that if your line has sections which are
aluminium rather than copper, the aluminium isn't good for conducting BB. An
all copper line will transport BB further than an aluminium line.

BT went through a phase of using aluminium wires because they were cheaper
than copper.

Excellent, so I probably can't get ADSL becuase of BT's cost cutting. That's
nice to know

Is there any way around this?

Well you could move, ducks & runs....

Oh by the way, it's not really BT's fault as it was the goverment
button counters at the time, as the company was being run by the
goverment when the decision to use Ali was made....

Depending on your location it could actually make things worse. They
could have to dacs your first line with your new one.

NO it was a long time ago and it was the GPO who did it. I remember
being told they used aluminium not for cost but in those days their was
a shortage on copper. All aluminium is well over 35 years old.

Hmmm, the property is only about 6-7 years old, and its in a new location
that was not developed before. I suppose the cables further on could be
aluminium

Probably copper from your house to the cab, then could be aluminium all
the way back to the exchange or a portion of it could be. As the cable
gets bigger so the makeup and poundage will change.
