From what you wrote I am assuming that you are talking
about accessing the network via VPN connection when you
say PPTP. In any case what I have found is that if you
are accessing a network from a remote location via VPN
the default settings for VPN enable the gateway for that
connection. So if you are connected to your remote
network you would have two default gateways. This seems
to cause havok on most operating systems because they
don't know what route to take. I found two solutions for
myself.
1.) disable the "Use remote default gateway" on your VPN
connection
2.) Sometimes if you are using ISA you can enable the
firewall client for your remote network and the proxy
server for the IE and may work
