Limit wireless bandwidth

Hi

I have a D-Link DSL-G604T router connected to a 1Mb line. I connect to it
through an ethernet cable but have recently enabled wireless on it so other
member of the family can use it.

Is there anyway to limit the wireless bandwidth, to say 200Kbs, so that my
connection doesn't get throttled by their downloads ?

Thanks for your time.

Tell them to limit their bandwidth use or you will revoke their access?

In my experience wireless connections don't get anywhere near the full speed
so sharing is not a problem in practice.

If you want full bandwidth, go into the router setup & switch off the
wireless function.
Mike.

My Netgear wireless link to a Dell laptop downstairs quite happily pulls
240KB/s (2Mbit) on a capped connection.

As for how to limit it, this sounds like something the downloading PC
should be able to implement, perhaps with extra software. I think
Windows offers a QoS service but I've no idea how to tweak it.

Otherwise it can be done in hardware, either by prioritising packets
(with a QoS-supporting switch) or by hard limiting traffic rates. Maybe
a gaming switch is the cheapest way to get these features?

The best I ever get is about half what I get on a wirded connection.

Stick a bit of tinfoil on a stick somewhere in the line of sight between
the router and the other family members PC. A bit of experimenting with
size and positioning should degrade the signal to the level you want.

Has the advantage that if you make it easily removable you can
implement the restrictions when needed

You haven't seen a working wireless connection then.
Mine manages 15M with ease (It may well do more but the ADSL limits it to
15M).
Its not even a double speed device as its a Centrino laptop.

I can limit the signal strength in the router settings. However, even with
the signal at full strength, the wireless PC only receives a signal strength
of around 65%. I've played around with the signal strength and even with it
turned down, the wireless PC still has around an 8Mb connection with the
router, which is enough to saturate my 1Mb line out.

I've done some more googling on this and it looks like the only way to do it
is with some new equipment. I think Linksys does a router with this feature.

The whole point is that I want to give them Internet access on their own
machine so they don't have to keep using mine. I just don't want to give
them the whole bandwidth. Thanks.
