vnc works far better with GNU/Linux than it ever will with windows

Try these then come back with a more specific question. Note that some
setups may need to be tweaked when dealing with win machines.

http://www.google.com/search?q=linux%20vnc

You need to determine which approach is most appropriate for you.

VNC was back-ported for windows. I use it all the time to access windows
machines. There are many viewers and servers available on Linux.

You've got a wide choice.

First off, you can use the built-in network support in X. You don't need any
special software to do this - just the xauth or xhost commands (to give the
remote system permission to display on your local display), and a
network-enabled X server on your local system.

If that's not acceptable, then you can install VNC for Linux.

There are other options available as well; some X desktops support protocols
similar to the MSWindows desktop sharing protocols, as well as all the X
network protocols.

Take your pick and name your poison ;-)
