It might be that your laptop NIC is set to use the wrong
signalling for your network, ie, either your LAN is at 10
MB/sec and the laptop is set for 100MB/sec only, or
vice-versa. In any case make sure the properties for your
lap top NIC are set to AUTO DETECT.
