Indeed.

However I'm earthing the phone connections on the DSL filter, not the
line itself.
With a good DSL filter the line will remain more of less balanced at
ultrasonic and RF frequencies.

This has to be the case as some mains operated cordless phone base units
etc present a very low impedance at RF from both lines to mains earth.

Note the several seconds, try it for 90 or so.....

I'm not risking setting off alarms at the exchange.

Note when I said totally unaffected I meant it - I was downloading a big
file at the time and the data continued to flow at a steady rate
(approaching 60KB/s) as indicated by DU meter.
