lifting phone receiver cuts broadband connection

Have just setup a small home network. Two computers sharing a
broadband connection. It is almost working just right apart from one
small problem. Everytime I lift the phone receiver up to answer a call
the broadband connection is lost. I have had the microfilters changed
and had the phone line connections checked out by a mate who works for
BT and they all seem fine. Not sure what else the problem could be.

Anyone else ever had this problem or any ideas to what could be
causing this?

Thanks

Andy

Poor quality or faulty microfilters.
Phone not connected via microfilter.

Nearly always a filtering problem but it could be a faulty phone...

If the filters are good a faulty phone shouldn't be a problem for the
ADSL.

Just plugging in a phone (sometimes unplugging) will often cause aggro with
ADSL connections. Seems obvious that faulty phones can cause problems too.

Please explain.

I suppose a phone that is also connected to the mains could do it.

If you bothered to think about it, any thing which generates a line fault
condition on a telephone line can cause problems with ADSL, this of course
includes telephones. If the phone, when the receiver is lifted, generates
noise spikes this can cause the exchange the drop synch. I've also had
experience where the conditions caused by a faulty/substandard phone was
convincing the DSLAM that there wasn't any DSL modem connected & yes if a
phone which has a 240volt connection (yes I know most are via a plug top
power supply) is inducing a 50 cycle hum onto the telephone line (due to a
transformer problem) then yes that can/will cause problems with a ADSL
service..

But you can exist in which ever world you want to, I have to deal with real
world faults.......

But a good filter (not a cheapo one) will filter everything in the ADSL
frequency range whether it be common mode or differential.
