How do I leave plusnet? They have been my only broadband provider and i
have been with them a year but they are expensive and now very slow. What
are the hidden costs etc and what information do i need to leave and join
someone else.

Phone them and ask/tell them wht you want to do - or is that a bit too
obvious?

My son has them. 14.99 not too pricey is it? And his connection is very
fast. And he only runs W98 on his Celeron box with the standard USB
ADSL modem with a 20 ft telephone extension cable to the phone point
downstairs.

I call that more than reasonable.

Yes, that's one option, but someone who may have been taken by the advertising
of an "up to 8 Mbps" connection back in the spring (wishful thinking / plain
marketing hype!) might have been paying 39.99 a month, not 14.99... Peter M

[ I'm using the 14.99 Broadband Plus account, perhaps the same as your son. ]

Interesting to note that no one else cares to answer the actual question, why?

There are probably exceptions to every rule but basically all you do is to
make up your mind which ISP you want to join. Then contact Plusnet and get a
MAC code [valid for about a month] and give that code and other details
requested to the new ISP.

You will be provided with a date that your new ISP will take you on as a
subscriber. On that date reconfigure your Internet connection with details and
information provided by the new ISP.

If you are "out of contract" with your previous ISP and have no equipment of
theirs to return then their is usually nothing to pay in the transfer process.

The downside is that many ISPs don't seem to be able to resist continually
collecting subscriptions once you have left them and obtaining refunds due to
you can take up to a year!

"MinusNet" has a deep hatred of Plus.Net for reasons unexplained (just
thinks they are .... no doubt), and lives in a cesspit, so has no civil
tongue. The vast majority of posts are simply insults with hardly any
'signal' in the 'noise' (perhaps 1 in 20 posts has information). Just
the other day there was a post by "Cherry Picker" which had similar
traits, so I assume it was "MinusNet" morphing to avoid filters.

First follow-up I saw indicated that a phone call would be in order. Not a
bad starting point, and one which would get the message across to Plus.Net
in how disappointed this (soon to be ex-) customer is, and why.

The OP presumably took some advice when choosing Plus.Net, perhaps found them
listed on ADSLguide, and has managed to get connected. It seems quite odd,
IMHO, to find someone has to ask how they can change ISP when the subject
gets plenty of coverage, whether on this newsgroup (which the OP found,
but perhaps has not taken any time to search, or sampled, and as they
use Plus.Net, should be able to get some hundreds of newsgroup posts if
they simply request all past headers for the group) or via some website, eg
ADSLguide.org (where I've little doubt migration has cropped up 'a few times')
