Learning Linux -- Help!

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me suggestions on how to start
learning the basics of Linux / networking with Linux. I have taken a
very basic Master's course on IP Sec, but for the most part I am a
hardware person up the Advanced Software Creek without a paddle --
chosen to be a paddler because I'm a top rate swimmer (???). If I could
learn Linux in a week, I would be a very happy engineer.

Questions I'd need answered include: What's an LNP, why do people use
it? What is Linux and why is it so good?

And then I'd actually need to learn Linux.

Seeing you posted the same messge twice, from NT,
and there are over 3,700 programs on my Mandrake Linux install, I'll
guess you will not be able to "learn Linux in a week". 8-)

Which linux, there are 190+ flavors out there. Which one have you
planned on starting with. http://www.distrowatch.com

Hmmm, a week, kock this off in 2 minutes
http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/Mandrak...and-Line.html/

Then jump through all the docs at http://www.tldp.org

You may want some hands on also. Hey if you can create an empty,
unformated, free ~4 gig partition check this install procedure
http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/Mandrak...akx-intro.html

Please bookmark the following, very large,

key word(s) in the first box
*linux* in Newsgroup box. You need to use the two
asterisks around linux, pick English

umm
linux is a free implementation of the unix operating system which I believe
it's correct to say is the most popular multi-user/networked operating
system ever. I say that considering that MS stuff tries to be a
multi-user/networkes operating system but fails in many respects (probably
not much disagreement here). there are a ton of books at your bookstore
that would be helpful, but one of the strengths of the linux community is
the wealth of documentation/tutorials/howto's on the web for free. try

http://www.tldp.org/

the linux documentation project
everything from howto's on specific issues to guides on broad subjects
start here

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html

kindof a linux introduction

learn linux in a week? better put on a pot of coffee ;-)
good luck

Sounds like you slacked off and now a deadline is near. Try slackware
linux (www.slackware.com).

If you only have a week, it'll be difficult. My suggestions:
1. Get a spare computer to practice on. Doesn't have to be the
latest or greatest, but it would be nice if it's at least
PIII 700 MHz, 256 Mb, floppy, cd-rw, 10Gb disk, ethernet.
2. Download/borrow/buy some linux distribution to install on the
computer.
3. Get a few good books:
"Linux in a Nutshell" oreilly.com
"Linux Network Administrator's Guide" oreilly.com
4. Plan on lots of overtime while you simultaneously read the books,
install linux, and play with/learn the sytem.

I don't know what a LNP is.

Good luck. This can be fun when you're not under the gun.

May be "Linux Network Programming"?

A week huh? You have *GOT* to be kiddin'....

There exists not a single operating system that can be mastered in one
week. Given the earlier suggestions you might be able to get one running
within that time-frame, but if you want to "learn" it, think months,
even years, but certainly not *a* week!

My reference BTW is: "Linux Unleashed" published by SAMS.

My 2 cents:
Take your system and experiment everything you can with it. It's the
best way to learn. Read every HOWTO and FAQ you find in your system,
I'm sure there's a lot of them. Use the TLDP at http://www.tldp.org/
as someone has said, it's the best place to start, you have books,
HOWTOS, FAQS, everything.

You are going to have a lot of fun learning Linux this way.
I'm sure of it.
