ld is not working over NFS (RH 9.0, RH 8.0)

ld is not working over NFS. I am able to run ifc -c file.f90 (where
ifc is intel fortran compiler) but linking the resultant object files
using ld fails with the error

ld: final link failed: Input/output error

If I copy the files into local partition and link the object files, then
everything works fine. But if the object files are nfs mounted, then I
am not able to run ld. Any ideas? Does any one else have this problem?
Is this a known bug? How to get around this?

NFS Client

redhat 9, GNU ld version 2.13.90.0.18 20030206, binutils-2.13.90.0.18-9,
ifcVersion 7.0 Build 20021028Z

$ uname -a
Linux k41.mae.cornell.edu 2.4.20-8 #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST 2003 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux

NFS server

redhat 8, Linux corrsin 2.4.18-14smp #1 SMP Wed Sep 4 11:55:37 EDT 2002
i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux


I do not have any problems if both the client and server are running
redhat 8. The problem shows up only when the client is rh 9.0 and the
server is rh 8.0
