I'm after some help

I am trying to get an old box to use my alcatel usb modem and act as
firewall and router.

I have found a package on the net
(http://www.geocities.com/potato.geo/stinglin.html) which installs fine,
usb modem is detected and when it attempts to dial the internet is
starts to and then fails with

PPPD LCP:timeout sending config-requests

I know the modem and line work fine as my windows box works perfectly,
what does this message point too ?

any help would be appreciated.

Paul
