My connection has just gone live. No news from UKFSN how I should
handle the initial ten days of max adsl, but I seem to recall they
test the service for 10 days after, before finally giving me a true
speed. What should I do for my part? ie don't disconnect router etc?

TIA

'They' don't do anything. MaxDSL soorts itself out.

Yes, leave the router on, not the PC. My experience is that it'll have more or
less have decided what speed to run at after about 4 days btw.

Your router sets its speed depending on the previous 10 days usage. So it
takes up to 10 days to find its best level.

It continues to do this.

The router itself does no such thing. BT's equipment determines the rate. What
happens is that it looks at the line performance under various conditions and
determines what the fastest is that it can provide that's reliable.

Unless of course you get a stuck IP Profle, then your problems could
begin (depends on how good your cs are)

I'm now five days into activation and the speed has remained fairly
constant, around 2mb since day one. I thought it was supposed to go up
and down?

Netgear stats now state the line as

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 68493 68831 0 244 1639 11:05:55
LAN 10M/100M 68859 69858 0 1669 284 11:06:29

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 26 db

I have left the router on since day one, apart from a power
disconnection last night for a few minutes.

Not my experience. It just went up.

It's syncing at 8128 kbps.

That's NOT a 2Mbps connection. How are you measuring your speed ? Chances are
that your speed is being limited by poor ISP performance. Which one ?

Two points:

1) Some ISPs rate limit to 2Mb/s, although the line syncs at 8Mb/s.
That's just marketing, as they are only offering you 2Mb/s on that
connection.

2) It's common to have a 2Mb/s cap for the first few days, but it should
then be lifted automatically.

If the OP was sold 'up to *Mb/s', then he should wait for the first 10
days to elapse. If it's still only 2Mb/s, but syncing at 8Mb/s, he
should ask his ISP to get BT to lift the cap.
