Is it necessary to shut down the laptop before installing or removing
a wireless PC card?

What does the instructions say? Mine said to install the software,
shut down, insert card, and reboot.

I don't *think* Steve is talking about the software, but the card, itself.

(I could be wrong. Steve?)

If so, are you talking about an internal Mini-PCI card or a CardBus/PCMCIA
type card?

no. you may have to "stop" the device though. there should be a green
arrow pointing down and to the left in your system tray. right click on it
and choose stop device. you'll get a dialog box, stop the device, then
remove it.

I've had no problem removing my wireless card while my Inspiron 1100 is
powered up. Upon re-insertion, everything functions as they should. The same
holds true when using a CF card adapter for the PCMCIA slot. I've not had to
'stop' either device using the remove hardware feature.

Ok, thanks. Just like a USB device, I guess...

inserting any type of pc card while the system is on requires special
consideration or you may damage the card. if the operating has pc card slot
management software installed (in windows it is usually represented by an
icon appears in the 'tray') then you can use that software to prepare the
slot for the removal or insertion of a card. however, in the case of a
network adapter (wireless or other) it won't work with certain operating
system and will with others (win9x requires a reboot, win2k/xp will utilize
it on the fly). your safest bet is to install the card when the system is
off and then boot.

Have several Compaq laptops with identical DLink cards. On 98SE
machines, you can remove the card, but reinsertion locks it up. The same
machine with XP has no problem.

Toshiba new Laptop miniPCI has no instructions on install. They specifically
direct the user to one of their service centers. At a price, of course. In
that case, I imagine you have to use the process of elimination and cross
off all the compartments that are not wireless, like memory, etc.

On that note, the Toshiba card is for a 802.11b in the spec sheet. Isn't it
possible to get a 802.11g instead?

No PCMCIA allows hot plugging and unplugging.
