Laptop takes long time to open the applications if not on Domain

I am a domain user in the office. Primary DNS is set as IP of my DC. If I
connect my laptop in other office which is not having domain, I can login to
my laptop using domain credentials without any problem. But after the login,
performance degrades a lot. Opening My Computer or Internet Explorer takes
time. Opening new blank tab in Internet Explorer takes more than 15 to 20
seconds. What do I need to do to resolve this?

You may have some persistent mapping. To confirm this, post back with the
result of net use.

In other office net use shows K: \\group_net\sys This is a novell
server I am connected to. In the main office where I am loging in to the
domain, net use shows nothing, no resorces are shared.
Another thing poped in my mind - our local DNS anme is same as our website
name. Will that be causing the problem? Is my laptop trying to marry the DNS
IP with the DNS name? not sure.

That is why. That is it. There is no other cause.

Mapped drives are bad
This is one of the common problems with Mappped drives
Mapped drives are a thing of the past
Mapped drives should be eliminated,...use Shortcuts based on the UNC paths,
but you may not be able to do that with Novel.

I disconnected the netword drive. Still no change.

The problems with Windows Explorer (mapped drives) and Internet Explorer are
two different things. I was focusing on Windows Explorer.

With the Mapped Drive removed, make sure there is nothing trying to re-map
it automatically, start over and restart and reconnect the machine. Wait
several minutes for the machine to "settle down" after starting
up,...machines always run slower (not faster) after a reboot for several
minutes till it settles in. Do not start up any Applications. Do your
"test" by opening Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

With Internet Explorer it may be caused by Proxy Settings or by the browser
being setup for proxy autodetection. If the browser is supposed to be setup
for proxy autodetection then there is nothing that can be done,..it will
take longer because it has to take time to determine that the proxy is "not
there" and give up. You will just have to live with it. But if IE is not
supposed to be using a proxy or is not supposed to be using proxy
autodetection,..then make sure you remove all of the different parts of the
proxy settings page.

For anything else I really have no hope of figuring that out via newsgroup
messages. But for the Windows Explorer thing, 99% of the time it is related
to mapped drives.

It’s not just Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. Overall performance of
the laptop is going down. I just gave these two as an example. Other
applications are slow as well. Before joining the Domain, everything works
fine. Checked it for any spyware/virus also.

Then there is nothing I can do with that. There is no way to "know enough"
about that machine from just newsgroup messages.

If it was at my place I would flatten it and reload it from scratch,..and
take close note to how the Apps are configured because they may have some
internal configurations that may be looking to the drive Letter that doesn't
exist and bogs them down.

Yash,
Use Sysinternals tools , like ProcessMonitor (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx ) to try
to find root cause of this issue. You may have some kind of hidden
reference pointing to a network ressource, which slowing down entire
system when unvailable. I also recommend you to have a look on Mark's
blog http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/default.aspx

Cheers

Thanks Phillip and PO.
I have already reconfigured the laptop once. I will check the links and
update you accordingly.
