Laptop locking up when using the Dlink DWL-G650 wireless network card

About a month ago, I bought a Toshiba S155 laptop along with the Dlink
DWL-G650 802.11g PCMCIA adapter. After 3 weeks of operation with no issues,
the laptop started locking up. The screen would freeze and the keyboard and
mouse would not function. The only way to recover was to pull the battery.
This happened several times and I returned the laptop to the store, not
realizing it may have been the network card causing the problem.

I then bought an Emachines M5305 laptop and started experiencing the same
lockups. I realized the only common denominator between the two was the
network card. So I ran the laptop without the network card and sure enough
it never crashed. But if you put in the network card, after a few minutes,
the laptop locks up.

I tried calling Dlink's technical support and they only suggested updating
the driver. I tried every driver on their web site, as well as the one
included on the CD, and still have the problem.

So does anybody have any ideas? I thought it may be an IRQ conflict issue.
But Windows XP Device Manager doesn't report any conflicts. The network
device (and corresponding PCMCIA adaptor slot) share IRQ 5 with the ATI
Radeon video card, as well as the fax modem. I tried disabling the fax
modem, but the lockup still occurred. I can't disable the video card
obviously, and I can't find a way to change the IRQ's, so I'm kinda stuck.

I'm posting this to both alt.internet.wireless and comp.sys.laptops in hope
that somebody in either one of the groups has seen this problem or has an
idea of how to fix it. Also, if you have a suggestion for a more
appropriate newsgroup to post this question in, please let me know.

Dan

I'm experiencing the same here with my card using Linux 2.4.21-ac4 and
the madwifi driver. Which hardware/firmware revision is your card?
Mine shows H/W: B2 F/W: 2.23 at the bottom side.

If my machine freezes, and I pull out the card, the freeze is gone, to
need to power cycle the notebook.

Tino

I was never able to install that card without it locking up my laptop.
Something's wrong with it, I think -- either the card, the firmware, or
the drivers. It's useless to me.
