I have a network between my laptop(XP) and desktop(98) which is working. My
laptop is the host and my desktop accesses the internet through it via a
crossover cable. I tried to reinstall the modem on the desktop but can't
access the CD drive at present. So no modem
It occurred to me that I should be using the LAN connection only as I won't
be using the Desktop modem.
How do I set up the system so that it is the LAN only which connects?

In Inernet Explorer go to tools>internet options>connections and set to
never dial. Then click on Lan settings and select auto detect. Go back
to network settings and make sure your gateway setting is correct.

Thanks Charles. I checked the never dial and ayuto detect and both are set
OK.
I didn't understand the last part. Where do I look and what should gateway
settings be set to so that they are correct.
Sorry to be so dim!

If you want to set up Internet Explorer to only use the
LAN to use the net, you should rerun the Internet
Connection Wizard, or goto Internet Options, and then
Connections, and disable the Dial-up connections (never
use this connection) and enable LAN connection there.

Control Panel > Network
Click on TCP/IP then goto Properties. I'm not sure which
tab its on, but there is a text lable Gateway with
textboxes for an IP address on the right.
