LAN Parameters for Wireless

I installed a wireless router which has one of its wired
ports connected to my XP PC. All works fine except:

The LAN icon and the port on the router are CONSTANTLY
active (internet icon is only active when I am accessing
the internet).

If I do not reboot daily, some paging files get filled
up, the system slows to a crawl and disk activity goes
thru the proverbial roof.

It would seem the PC is 'pinging' the router every
second. Is there some change I canmake to stop this?

What kind of router?
If its microsoft and your running the network utility change the update
frequency or close it entirely. What does the router log indicate?
