Lack of ADSL synchronisation ... mystery!

A friend on Pipex ADSL MAX has been using a Netgear DG834 wired router
with complete success.

He recently got a Netgear DG834N wireless router - and it wouldn't
synchronise.
Thinking it faulty, he got a replacement - and that doesn't synchronise
either.

The Internet light doesn't even flash to indicate the router is
attempting synchronisation.

Going back to his DG834 wired router, everything is perfect again.

What on earth could be going on?
I can't even come up with sensible hypotheses.
I am at my wit's end!
Please help.

Something as simple as using an incorrect cable for connecting it to
the line?

On the new router, has he run the Setup Wizard from the web interface?
Browse to 192.168.0.1 and login as username=admin/ password=password.

Afterwards, check that:

- Basic Settings: Encapsulation=PPPoA
Login/Password are set to values allocated by ISP, same as
for old router

- ADSL Settings: Multiplex=VC-Based
VPI/VCI=0/38


If VPI/VCI are incorrect and aren't set to the BT-standard values of 0 and
38, this might cause the router to fail to see the DSL carrier.


Having done this, restart the router (pull power lead out, wait 30 seconds,
plug lead in) and see whether it flashes the DSL light as it starts to
recognise the DSL carrier.

See if the Logs menu gives any error messages. The normal startup sequence
in the log is (from memory):

LCP is down
LCP is allowed to come up
CHAP authentication success

Could be. Are you using the same cable and microfilter in each case -
unplugging the RJ11 from the old router and plugging it into the new router?
If so, the "wrong cable" explanation isn't valid.

Unless the routers socket is wired differently, which I have seen.
Its best to use the one that came with the router.

Assuming you've got everything plugged in correctly, and you've
defaulted it before rechecking everything, it's shagged.

If it's a wired RJ45 connection, does the RJ45 PC card
have a link light, and is it on?
The RJ45 connection may need a X-over RJ45 cable.
Does anything come from the router if you reset it or
power it up.
I have Ethereal on my PC, it's useful for collecting
packets, to see what you sent, and if anything came
back.
Can you ping the router?
There are two default IP address ranges
10.0.0.0 to 10.0.0.255 and
192.168.0.0 to 192.168,0.255
and they don't mix.
So if the router is 10.0.0.138 and the PC
192.168.0.nnn you might have a problem.

Start from everything powered off.
Switch on the router.
Switch on the PC, let it boot, and log in as necessary.
Use the command IPCONFIG /ALL to tell you what the IP address is of the
router. It will be called the Default Gateway.

Confirm that you can ping that address

Now open the web browser at that address.
