Can anybody suggest an equivalent service, or some way in which the current
service can be funded to continue?

If you have an AAISP connection, the services provided by L8NC are built
in. Not that that helps most people....!

Does that mean one can monitor only the IP address associated with the AAISP
connection, or can one monitor several IP addresses (from different ISPs) ??

It means AAISP monitor your connection (using LCP rather than ICMP to do
the "pinging" IIRC) and if they see a fault they can act on it before
you even notice :-)
