Who knows routers?

I've got a D-link DI-713P wireless router which is now discontinued
and no longer supported by D-link, just my luck.

This router was working just fine and then all of a sudden I can't get
online, not even while hard-wired into the router. When I hook into
my cable modem direct and bypass the router, I can get online just
fine so I know the problem is the router.

When I try IPCONFIG (I'm running Win2K)I see that the router's IP
address isn't shown. When I manually enter it into my TCP/IP's
properties menu, it still doesn't work. I can't access the router's
setup page either. D-link's tech support was utterly useless. I've
tried resetting the router and switching ports and nothing works.

Can someone please give me some direction here as I am on the verge of
just buying a new router altogether.

Thanks.

It sounds to me like you need to Reset The TCP/IP Stack On the Win 2K
O/S. You can look it up with Google or Dogpile.

Try resetting the router. There should be a tiny hole in the back of
the router. Using a paperclip, press inside the hole for several
seconds while the router resets itself to its default settings.
Hopefully, this will sove your problem. If not, I'm sure someone else
will offer a better solution. Take care.

If you try those and it still don't work is the router. Mine died to so I
did this. If you have a old pc lying around, setup m0n0wall. Very easy to
setup make a ISO bootable CD and your set. Very easy to set up and it comes
with a captive portal if you serve up wifi for others as I do.

http://m0n0.ch/wall/

Try it out
Thanks

Sometimes routers just die - nothing you can do about it, unless it's under
warranty and it sounds like yours isn't.
If the previous suggestions don't work, go to Best Buy or Circuit City and
spend a few bucks on a new router. You can probably get an 11mps wireless
router for around 30 to 40 bucks.

Good luck,

- Tom C.

Thanks for the input guys. I tried resetting the router, that didn't
work either. In IPCONFIG, I tried releasing the IP address and
renewing it but it won't let me release the IP because the DHCP was
automatically set (that's what it tells me anyways).

I'm thinking this thing is done.

Any other input would be appreciated.

Thanks Tom. Here's another question, what types of wireless routers
are particularly worth looking at? Im' going to have a hard time
buying another D-Link. My friends have had success with Linksys.

Does it matter that my wireless card is from D-Link, will that be a
problem with a Linksys router?

Thanks.
