Hi all

Is it possible to get broadband service from other than Kingston
Communications in the Hull area?
I know they have the monopoly on the hardware and provision of connectivity,
but is it possible to get the actual broadband service from another provider
eg Tiscali?

TIA

Phil

No.

Their equipment, their rules. It's the same as with NTL and their cable
network. Unless Kingston decide to do an agreement with an ISP then they
have no obligation to provide another ISP's broadband on their network.

You may find that in the future Eclipse offer service on Kingston
however. Just how they implement that would remain to be seen, but
Eclipse is a Kingston brand with value in the name above that of Karoo.

The Kingston arrangements for telecoms also precludes any other ISP
having the ability to connect broadband via their network as the
physical infrastructure is not set up to allow ISP gateways in the way
BT's does. All that could possibly be done at the moment is for
unbundling of Kingston exchanges by people like Be or Easynet.

As a matter of interest, what is Oftel's view of Kingston's monopoly in
Hull, given that everywhere else you can get your phone and internet service
from a variety of providers, even if the local loop itself is largely a BT
monopoly?

It does seem unfair when BT have to allow other providers access to their
network, when Kingston doesn't.

Well it's all the other Telco's not just Kingston who do this & it was
all supposedly to do with levelling the playing field. How succesful it
was I'll let you decide..

Hull, end of the line in many different ways ....

I'm from Hull, notice the "from" not "in" ....

Actually Kingston do have to let other providers access their network. It's
just that no other providers have chosen to do so.

Chris.

Thanks to all respondents
I guessed it was a monopoly situation but wanted to confirm.

Why would anyone care about being fair to a telecoms company? The
problem is not that it's unfair, it's that it's wrong!
