My debian CD includes 2.4.18 source, the installed kernel version is
2.2.20

I need the source to compile a network driver. Is it important to use
2.2.20 sources or can I use 2.4.18 that came on the CD?

This is a problem because without a working network there is no way of
getting the 2.2.20 source files from say the internet into this machine.

Kernel modules need to be build for the specific version in which they
will be used. Ie, you need the 2.2.20 sources to build a modules for
this kernel.

Why do you need to use kernel-2.2.20? That's pretty old. Why not just
build a 2.4.18 kernel and modules from the sources you have?
