Just picked up the Kensington Model #: 33063 and took a 'warwak' around the
neighborhood. Works as advertised but I found the display LEDs hard to see
in bright sunlight and had to keep an eye on the display instead of watching
my step. It took only a couple of hours to add the circuit card and
transducer from an electronic sound effects toy. Had to trim the sound
effects PCB to its minimum, replace the original wires with AWG 30, and add
a 1N914 diode to the input so I could connect to the bi-polar LED (minimum
signal strength), and remove the plastic sounder to get everything to fit.
Double sided sticky tape and a paper insulator completed the mod.
Don't know what effect the modification has on the RF section but the WiFi
Finder seems to have the same range as before. Still considering a switch
to turn off the sound instead of allowing it to run for the full 2 minutes.
(You can disable the sound by holding the button but you still get another 2
minutes once released unless the signal strength has dropped below the
activation level.
Another modification under consideration is a switch and circuit to activate
the WiFi Finder continuously instead of having to press the switch
repeatedly. Anyone already done this or have the schematic? Also, what's
the electrical and protocol interface for the JTAG connector? Should be
easy to connect an external antenna to replace the etched dipole, as well.
