Yes it's wifi newbie question time again, I've done the net and group
searches and my fluffy little head is in a spin, so hopefully you can put
me straight?

I have a desktop connected to an NTL cablemodem via ethernet and
now wifey is getting a laptop and wants to share / clog up my net
connection, share files etc.

Question is this, is the simplest option a desktop PCI wifi card for a
peer to peer connection (lappy already has wifi) and is the only real
advantage to a router a net connection for the laptop when the PC is
off?

So can the laptop communicate directly with a PCI card in the desktop
without a router?

TIA

Personally I would go for an access point connected to your
NTL cablemodem (ethernet out, not USB right?). You would probably need a
hub also. PC then goes into hub.

As the laptop already has WiFi you are set. No way would I try and get ICS
working (and keep it working more importantly) more trouble than it's
worth......

Can't do this. Access points act as wireless hubs, I believe. Since NTL only
give out one IP you will need a router if you want dedicated hardware.

You can just use a PCI card in the PC and then use ICS, but then remember
that:

1. ICS is terrible
2. You won't get the same range as with a router
3. The PC has to be on for the laptop to use net.

Get a router. Scavenge through ebuyer.co.uk and there are some pretty cheap
ones (that work). You can set up a wlan for under £70 that is easily
expandible as time goes on.
