I have a dell notebook. SMC 802.11g barricade router and pcmcia card. WinXP
Pro.

I want to make it so that I can close my screen and the notebook goes in to
standby like normal, but I want to prevent the wireless card from dropping
the signal and shutting down. I want it to stay online and keep my internet
programs running online connected.

Is this possible? If so, how?

I don't think what you want to do will work (it will certainly run down
the batteries if you are not plugged in), but I noticed that my wireless
network card wasn't shutting down on suspend (Dell Inspiron 8200, 1184
internal wireless card). The setting that kept it running was:

Start|Connect to|Show all connections
Right click on your wireless connection and choose Properties
Select the General tab.
Click the Configure button.
Choose the Power Management tab.
Uncheck the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'
check box.
