Hey all, new to this so bare with me

I wonder if it would be possible to link up two routers over a cable/dsl
connection?

For example i would like to link our network to my uncle's network for file
sharing and LAN games. Is this possible without any expensive VPN
hardware/software?

Any insight would be much appricated. = )
