The best you can do is to go into the Network properties screen (either from
Control Panel or by right-clicking Network Neighborhood and selecting
properties), highlight Client for Microsoft Networks and select properties,
then put in the name of the domain you want to authenticate to. This will
check the user name and password against an NT domain, but doesn't force a
logon (you can still hit Esc or Cancel) and doesn't make the PC part of the
domain.
